Sweet Briar, Virginia – The Oberlin Field Hockey team played their second game of a back-to-back on Saturday afternoon, defeating Sweet Briar College 2-0 to leave Virginia with a pair of wins on opening weekend.
This marks the first time since the 2010 season that the Yeowomen have begun the year with two consecutive wins.
After a scoreless opening quarter that saw the Yeowomen outshoot the Vixens 4-0, Oberlin got on the board early in the second when
Meredith Warden collected a rebound and passed it to
Libby Royer who buried it in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead with 9:37 to go in the quarter.
The Vixens responded with five shots before the half but goalkeeper
Julia Vincent answered the bell, making four saves in the quarter to keep her team ahead 1-0 heading into halftime.
The Yeowomen gained some breathing room halfway through the third quarter as
Fatima Escalera set up
Hayley Segall who beat the Vixens goalkeeper on the left side from three yards out to increase the margin to 2-0 with 6:30 remaining in the third.
Oberlin's defense stood tall the rest of the way as it blocked a couple of shots and Vincent made a pair of saves on the way to securing a victory.
The Yeowomen outshot the Vixens 16-10 and 13-6 in shots on goal while also holding an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Oberlin heads to Kentucky next weekend for a pair of games, starting with a contest against Centre College on Saturday, September 7 at noon.
