Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Tigers in NCAC Opener

Springfield, Ohio — The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team fell to the Wittenberg University Tigers in its North Coast Athletic Conference Opener Saturday afternoon at Edwards-Maurer Field.

Offensively, Thomas Berle Carman led the Yeomen with his first collegiate hat. Joey Edell, Tom Decker and Michael Muldoon each recorded goals in the defeat.

The Tigers took control of the game in the first period, as they netted the first three goals of the contest. Berle Carman got the Yeomen on the board just 55 seconds into the second quarter, but Wittenberg responded quick, scoring five of the final seven goals of the half to take a 8-3 lead into halftime.

The Tigers extended its lead out to 10-3 and held the Yeomen scoreless in the third period. Noah Moderwell and Matthew Welch netted the pair of Wittenberg goals.

In the fourth the Yeomen looked to be making a comeback as they scored three of the first five goals of the period. Muldoon cut the Tigers to 11-4 and after a Tiger goal a pair of Berle Carman tallies cut the Wittenberg lead to six, 12-6 with 7:14 left.

Unfortunately the Oberlin comeback stalled there, as the Tigers went on to put three more on the scoreboard in the final six minutes of play.

Junior goalie Calvin Filson faced all 52 of the Tigers shots and finished the game with a season-high 15 saves.

The Yeomen were able to get off just 27 shots in the game, as the Tigers had the advantage in ground balls (53-41), face-offs (17-8), and forced 33 Oberlin turnovers. Five of the eight Yeomen face-off victories were credited to rookie Maurice Freese

Oberlin will look to bounce back on the west coast as they start its spring trip against Elmhurst College on Tuesda. The opening face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PST/4:00 p.m. EST.
