Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team didn't have any answers for the hot-shooting DePauw Tigers who came to Philips Gym and left with an 80-67 win over the Yeomen on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers did the Yeomen in from beyond the arc in the wire-to-wire victory as they cashed in 15 of the 31 3-pointers they hoisted for a 48.4 percent success rate.
Senior
Joshua Friedkin did all he could to try and keep the Yeomen close as he poured in a season-high 23 points. Fellow backcourt mate
Christian Fioretti added 12 points, while senior
Andre Campbell finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.
Isaac Finestone chipped in nine points off the bench.
The Tigers set the tone from the onset, connecting on three straight triples en route to building an early 12-4 advantage. The Yeomen would answer back with a 10-3 run that featured two of Friedkin's five triple-hits in the game to shrink the deficit down to 15-14 midway through the half.
However, the Yeomen would suffer an over six-minute dry spell as the Tigers' swelled the lead to 27-14 at the 3:51 mark. Oberlin had the margin down to single digits in the closing seconds of the half but Luke Steinhart would beat the halftime horn with a half-court heave to make it a 34-23 game at the intermission.
It was more of the same in the second half as the Tigers extended the cushion to 18, 51-33, before the Yeomen tried to claw their way back into the contest. A Friedkin layup with 8:16 left to expire had the Yeomen within striking distance at 60-50 but the Tigers would never relent their double-digit lead until just 53 seconds remained as they would go on to ice the game away with four three throws.
The Yeomen shot just 39.3 percent (21-of-53) in the loss, while the Tigers hit on 25 of 53 shots for a 47.2 percent clip. Oberlin went 16-of-20 (80%) at the free-throw line, while DePauw finished 15-of-20 (75%). The Tigers also ended with a slight 33-32 edge on the glass.
The Tigers had five players finish in double figures, led by Josh Hall's 18 points. With the win, they moved to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the NCAC. Oberlin fell back to 6-3 and are tied with DePauw at 1-2 in league play.
The Yeomen will play their final regular season game of 2019 on Tuesday night when they travel to Defiance. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m.
