Defiance, OH – Oberlin College senior
Joshua Friedkin became the 26
th player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points, doing so in grand fashion as his go-ahead 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to play proved to be the difference in the Yeomen's 70-69 win at Defiance College on Tuesday night.
Friedkin finished with a team-high 17 points to give him 1,001 for his illustrious four-year career. The Emeryville, California, native hit on five of his 11 triple-tries in the victory. Fellow senior
Christian Fioretti added 16 points, while
Isaac Finestone chipped in 13 points off the bench.
No more than two possessions separated the two foes throughout the first half. The Yellow Jackets held a six-point lead midway through the opening frame but back-to-back triples from Fioretti and
Wolf Moser evened the count at 19-all at the 8:37 mark.
The Yeomen later trailed by five but they would again square the contest at 30-30 on a 3-pointer by Finestone and a Fioretti finish in the lane with 4:28 left to expire in the session. However, the Yellow Jackets would ultimately carry a 42-37 cushion into the break.
Oberlin wasted no time taking the lead in the second half as Friedkin opened up the session with a pair of triple-hits to put the Yeomen out in front by one, 43-42. Defiance would later respond with an 8-2 spurt to claim a 56-51 edge before a
Charles Tiedemann layup and Finestone trifecta tied the game at 56-56 with 11:13 remaining in the battle.
The Yeomen led 67-61 with just over five minutes to play but they would go cold down the stretch as the Yellow Jackets put together an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead in the closing moments.
After the clutch shot from Friedkin, the Yeomen still had to shut down the Yellow Jackets to preserve the win. Defiance would miss a 3-pointer with eight seconds to play but an offensive rebound provided new life. However, the Yeomen defense would stand tall in the end as
Jordan Armstrong came away with a steal to finish off the victory.
The loss was the first of the season for Defiance, which dropped back to 6-1. Oberlin closed out the 2019 calendar year at 7-3.
Oberlin will now break from action for three weeks before returning to the court on December 31 with an exhibition game against Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
