New Haven, CT – The Oberlin College men's basketball team opened the 2019-20 season at Division I Yale, dropping the exhibition affair with the Bulldogs by the score of 94-37.
The Yeomen hung tight with the 2019 Ivy League champs throughout the first half but the home Bulldogs pulled away in the second session to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
Wolf Moser cashed in three triple-tries to lead the Yeomen with nine points – all of which came in the first half. Rookie
Dorde Otasevic added eight points and six rebounds in his collegiate debut.
The Yeomen trailed 21-5 in the early going but methodically worked their way back into the game. An
Evan Suppa 3-pointer followed by five straight points from Otasevic had the deficit down to 10, 31-21, with 3:47 left in the opening half.
A minute later one of Moser's three triple-hits shrunk the margin down to 33-24 but the Bulldogs would ultimately carry a 38-26 cushion into the intermission.
The Bulldogs came out of the second half with a renewed sense of urgency as they smothered the Yeomen defensively, holding them to just two points for the first 9:48 of the period while ballooning the lead out to 39 at 67-28 to effectively put the game away.
A total of 13 players scored for the Bulldogs, led by 13 points from Paul Atkinson.
After shooting 10-of-25 (40%) in the first half, Oberlin was held to just 11 second-half points with a 4-of-22 (18.2%) showing from the floor. The Bulldogs shot 56.6 percent with 30 makes on 53 attempts. The home team also benefited from a large discrepancy at the free throw line where they hoisted 44 freebies with 27 makes (61.4%) while Oberlin missed all five of its charity tosses.
The Yeomen will play their first official game tomorrow night against New York University on the campus of Hunter College. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
