New York, NY – The Oberlin College men's basketball team erased a four-point halftime deficit to earn a 76-62 road win over New York University on Saturday night at the campus of Hunter College.
Three Yeomen finished in double figures led by senior
Andre Campbell who led all scorers with 19 points on an efficient 8-of-13 shooting. Classmate
Christian Fioretti added 16 points, while rookie
Dorde Otasevic added 14 points and eight rebounds - one shy of Campbell's nine.
The Yeomen opened the game with a 7-0 spurt that featured five points from Otasevic, but the Violets would settle in to tie the game at 9-9 on a pair of Cade Hoppe free throws at the 14:18 mark. It would remain nip and tuck for the rest of the opening half as no more than four points would separate the two foes with NYU ultimately carrying a 35-31 cushion into the interval.
Oberlin came out of the locker room with a renewed sense of urgency, opening the half with a 21-7 run that featured eight points from Fioretti and a pair of triple-hits from
Isaac Finestone to make it a 52-42 Yeomen advantage with 10:36 left to play in the game.
A litter under four minutes later, a Otasevic layup ballooned the lead out to 17 at 63-46 and in the closing minutes back-to-back long-range connections from
Wolf Moser and Otasevic swelled the lead out to 21, 72-51, to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
The Yeomen shot a blistering 49.2 percent with 30 makes on 61 tries, which included a strong 9-of-21 (42.9%) showing from beyond the arc. Oberlin held the Violets to just a 38.9 percent shooting clip as they connected on 22 of the 56 shots they hoisted. OC also finished with a 41-28 advantage on the glass and racked up eight blocks compared to NYU's three.
The Yeomen will return home for a short bit at 1-0 on the year before heading back out on the road for a Tuesday night tilt at Manchester. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
