Oberlin, Ohio – After two tough losses, the Oberlin College men's basketball team returned to its winning ways, earning a commanding 80-55 victory over the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
Oberlin used a diverse scoring attack as five different players netted at least eight points in the win. Senior
Joshua Friedkin led the charge with 22 points, doing most his damage at the free-throw line where he went a perfect 13-of-13. Classmate
Andre Campbell added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while fellow veteran
Christian Fioretti chipped in 10 points to accompany his game-high six assists.
On the interior,
Dorde Otasevic dropped in eight points to go along with five boards, while senior
Charles Tiedemann also contributed eight points off the bench on 3-of-4 shooting.
The Yeomen opened the game with a 12-2 run less than four minutes in but the Yellow Jackets would settle in and stay within striking distance throughout the remainder of the opening half. A near-corner triple-hit from senior
Abe Kuhn with 5:49 left in the session had the Yeomen out in front 32-25, but the Yellow Jackets answered back as a Frank Bozicevic 3-pointer had to cushion all the way down to one, 33-32, at the 2:36 mark. However, the Yeomen would close the half strong to carry a 39-32 advantage into the interval.
Less than seven minutes into the second session, a long-range connection by
Wolf Moser pushed the lead out to 54-42 and the differential would only swell from there. A traditional 3-point play by
Jordan Armstrong ballooned the lead out 66-46 with 8:36 left to play to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
Oberlin shot 54.3 percent from the floor (25-of-46) and went an impressive 24-of-27 (88.9%) at the free-throw line. The swarming Yeomen defense held the Yellow Jackets to a 37.3 percent (19-of-51) shooting success rate.
The Yeomen ran their record to 5-2 with the win, while Waynesburg dropped back to 0-6.
Oberlin returns to action on Wednesday night at Kenyon College. Tip-time is set for 8 p.m.
