Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team enters a new era under Head Coach
Stephany Dunmyer.
Dunmyer brings 16 years of head coaching experience to the Oberlin bench as she led the Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship game five times to go along with two regular season conference titles. Her teams also won double-digit games in 14 of the 16 seasons she was at the helm.
"I am so excited to have the opportunity to coach such an impressive group of student-athletes and to work with such an amazing staff." Dunmyer said. "They have brought tremendous energy to the court and are committed to building and sustaining a championship culture. In our program, that means being all in, striving to live our core values on a daily basis, and most importantly, being a great teammate. If we can focus on those controllables, support each other, and use adversity to make us stronger, it is going to be a really fun season."
Dunmyer inherits an Oberlin squad that is just two years removed from a North Coast Athletic Conference Championship. The Yeowomen, who went 15-11 overall and 10-6 in league play last year, have won 32 NCAC battles over the last three years and enter the 2019-20 campaign with six seniors.
The interior features the senior trio of
Jasmine Sorrells,
Maggie Gross, and
Mackenzie Michaels. Sorrells, a co-captain from San Francisco, California, made the most of her opportunities last season as she averaged 6.3 points and five rebounds in just over 14 minutes of work per game. She was also one of the league's best rim protectors, racking up 68 blocks on the year. Gross, who is also a team captain, had a breakout junior campaign, starting 19 of the team's 26 games, posting 6.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest. Michaels' leadership on and off the court should lead to a more impactful role on the floor this winter.
"With six seniors in the gym every day, there should always be a sense of urgency," Dunmyer added. "While Jasmine and Maggie are our captains this season, each senior brings something so unique and positive in terms of leadership. This group and the leadership and commitment that they bring have certainly made the transition easier for our new coaching staff."
Junior forward
Tyler Collins had a solid sophomore season and could develop into a dangerous threat as her 5-foot-11 frame presents mismatch problems for opposing foes. She matched Gross for second on the team with 6.5 rebounds to accompany her 5.1 points per game. Sophomore
Jai Cunningham and first-year
Jasmine Roberts bolster the frontcourt depth.
Senior point guard
Cheyenne Arthur is coming off the best season of her career as she finished third on the team in scoring with 7.9 points per game to go along with a team-high 61 assists. Arthur also shot over 35 percent from 3-point land with 30 makes on 85 attempts. Sophomore
Sammy Spanier, who drew four starts as a rookie and played in 23 games, has impressed the coaching staff in preseason camp with her work ethic and skill set in addition to her ability to be an energy-giver and great teammate.
Senior
Ally Driscoll looks to return to her sophomore form after playing at less than 100 percent for much of last year. Driscoll, who averaged eight points and 3.4 assists in her second year, has the skill set to play the point or the off-guard position. With strong driving ability and a knack to score the basketball, the 5-foot-9 guard is a tough cover for many opponents.
Junior
Leo Ross is ready to build off their strong sophomore season that featured 34 made threes and 5.6 points per game. Senior
Nichole Geist, sophomore
Mia Woo, freshman
Grace Burns, and transfer
Rowan Smith provide added depth to the backcourt.
"On a given night, any of our players could step up and be a difference-maker," Dunmyer noted. "While we will definitely need certain players to separate themselves and be consistent go-to options for us, we will be much more dangerous if we can continue to develop depth in all areas on the floor."
The Yeowomen open the season with four straight road battles starting on Saturday, November 9 at Alma College (MI). Their first game on the Philips Gym floor is set for Saturday, November 23 against Bluffton. Conference play will commence on December 4 at Kenyon.
