Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College volleyball fought hard on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately were outdone by the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops in straight sets.
The Yeowomen dropped the first two sets by identical 22-25 scores, before handing the Battling Bishops the third, 20-25. The loss drop Coach Rau's crew to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
The first set was tilted in Oberlin's favor until late in the stanza when the Bishops knotted the score at 17-17. The Bishops took the next point and extended their lead to 23-19, before the Yeowomen stole back three points to draw the score line to 22-23 and force an OWU timeout. Out of the break, the Battling Bishops took the next two points to close the first set.
Midway through the second, OWU knotted the match at 15-15 and proceeded to rattle off three straight points and maintained the upper hand, to close the set 22-25, despite a late offensive surge from the Yeowomen.
In the decisive third set, the Yeowomen jumped out front early on to take an 8-5 lead, but the Bishops chipped away at the Oberlin lead and drew even at 11-11. The Yeowomen gave up the next point and despite pulling within one late, were unable to overcome the deficit. OWU closed the set and match with four-straight points.
Oberlin's offensive effort was led by
Emery Beacom,
Maura Gibbs and
Jaya Flynn-Young, who finished with eight kills each. Flynn-Young also finished with a team-high .500 hitting percentage. Setter
Samantha Lam closed the match with 29 assists and 3 kills, while
Lauren Fitts led the Crimson and Gold with 3 service aces.
The Bishops were led by Eliza Robinson with ten kills, while Jordan Brandt led OWU with 3 service aces.
The Yeowomen return to action on Friday, October 11 when they play host to Franciscan University at 7 p.m. inside of Philips Gymnasium.
