Greencastle, Indiana – The Oberlin College volleyball team dropped a three-set match to the DePauw University Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
Oberlin falls to 9-11 overall and 1-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
The Tigers ran out to a 17-4 lead in the first set before back-to-back kills by
Maura Gibbs and
McLean Sammon stopped the run at 18-6. Unfortunately, DePauw put together another run, this time 8-1, to close out the first set 25-7.
Another Gibbs kill cut the Yeowomen's deficit to three, 7-4, early in the second set but the Tigers responded with 13 of the next 17 points to nearly double up Oberlin at 20-11.
Samantha Lam set up
Natasha Radic to trim the margin to single digits at 22-15 but the lead was too much to overcome as DePauw took the second set by five points, 25-20.
It was more of the same in the third set as the Tigers jumped out to 7-1 and 12-1 advantages to force Yeowomen timeouts.
Trailing 20-5, Oberlin continued to fight as a stretch of five straight points thanks to kills by Sammon,
Jaya Flynn-Young and
Emery Beacom cut the lead in half at 20-10.
After the Tigers stopped the Yeowomen momentum at 23-11, Oberlin put a scare into DePauw by trimming the margin down to seven at 23-16 to force a timeout. That settled down the Tigers as they took two of the final three points to win the third set 25-17.
Lam lead the Yeowomen with 17 assists and nine digs.
