Oberlin, Ohio – The No. 25 ranked College of Wooster Fighting Scots defeated the Oberlin College men's basketball team by the score of 78-53 on Saturday night at Philips Gym.
Both teams had three players finish in double figures with junior
Christian Fioretti guiding the Yeomen effort with 14 points, while classmates
Joshua Friedkin and
Andre Campbell added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Wooster's Reece Dupler led all scorers with 21 points.
Oberlin's lone lead of the game came early on at 3-2 but the Yeomen stayed within striking distance throughout the first half. A fastbreak layup from
Eli Silverman-Lloyd had the Scots' lead down to just 18-16 at the 7:35 mark. A Fioretti finish in the paint at the 2:01 mark later made it 28-24 but Wooster would close the half with an 8-2 spurt that was capped off by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Eric Bulic to give them a 36-26 cushion at the intermission.
A quick surge by the Scots ballooned the lead out to 18 early in the second half but an old-school 3-point play by Fioretti cut the deficit back down to 12, 52-40, with 14 minutes to go. However, an 8-0 response by the Scots gave them their first 20-point lead of the night less than three minutes later as they left no doubt in the eventual outcome.
The Yeomen were never able to work their way back into the contest as Wooster pushed the lead out to as many as 30 points en route to moving to 11-3 on the season and 6-1 in the NCAC. Oberlin suffered its second consecutive loss to a Top-25 team, dropping back to 7-6 on the year and 3-3 in league action.
Wooster finished with a 37-26 edge on the glass and turned 18 Yeomen turnovers into 21 points. The Scots shot an even 50 percent (28-of-56) from the floor, including an impressive 9-of-20 (45%) showing from 3-point land. Oberlin connected on just 20 of the 52 shots as it hoisted for a 38.5 percent clip.
The Yeomen will look to get back on track on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Hiram College for another conference clash. Tip-time is set for 3 p.m.
