Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team suffered a 68-57 setback to the visiting DePauw University Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
Eli Silverman-Lloyd led the Yeomen with 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Christian Fioretti added 12 points and four helpers, while
Joshua Friedkin cashed in 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers along the way.
Oberlin used a 7-0 spurt to create some early separation, opening up a 16-8 advantage with 14:44 left in the opening half but an 8-0 response by the Tigers drew the game back to even just over two minutes later.
After going down by the three points, the Yeomen answered back to take a 28-22 edge on a fastbreak layup from
Andre Campbell at the 8:14 mark. Oberlin later led 34-28 with 5:05 left to expire in the session but would go scoreless the rest of the way, settling for just a 34-32 cushion at the intermission.
The score was knotted at 43-all with less than 14 minutes go but the Tigers would take control with a 12-2 burst to open up a 55-45 lead with 8:49 on the clock. A triple-hit from Friedkin and four points from Silverman-Lloyd shrunk the gap down to 57-52 with 5:25 remaining in the contest but the Yeomen would get no closer the rest of the way. A finish inside from Campbell made it 63-57 with 2:10 still to expire but Oberlin would be shutout down the stretch as DePauw iced the game at the free throw line.
The charity tosses were plentiful for the Tigers as they hoisted 20 freebies – making 16 for an 80 percent clip. Meanwhile, the Yeomen went to the stripe just twice on the afternoon – missing both.
The Tigers, who were led by Nolan Ginther's game-high 22 points, shot 48.9 percent (23-of47) from the floor, which included a 6-of-12 showing from beyond the arc. The Yeomen finished with an impressive 52 percent (26-of-50) but struggled from distance as they went just 5-of-18 (27.8%) from 3-point land.
DePauw won the battle of the boards 30-22 and saw its bench bunch outscore its Oberlin counterparts 20-4.
The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 10-9 on year and 6-6 in the NCAC. DePauw heads back to Greencastle, Indiana owning a 13-6 mark overall and 7-5 count in league play.
Oberlin will be back in on Wednesday night when host Ohio Wesleyan at 8 p.m.
