Yeomen Comeback Bid Falls Short Against OWU

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team fell to the visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops, 80-70, on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.

Yeomen senior Eli Silverman-Lloyd became the 25th player in school history to surpass 1,000 points as he finished the night with seven tallies to bring his career account to 1,006. However, it was junior Joshua Friedkin who led the Yeomen charge with a season-high 26 points as he cashed in six 3-pointers along the way to accompany his six assists and five steals. Classmate Andre Campbell also impressed with 19 points as he was a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the floor.

While the temperatures outside were bitter cold, the Bishops' first-half shooting was anything but as they dialed in on nine triple-tries in the frame. OWU led by as many as 21 points in the period and ultimately carried a 44-27 cushion into the second session.

Jaret Gerber, who led the Bishops with 28 points off the bench, knocked down one of his five 3-pointers to make it a 49-29 game early in the second half, but the Yeomen started their comeback bid with a 14-1 run that featured nine points from Friedkin. His steal and subsequent fast-break layup had the gap down to 50-43 with just under 15 minutes left to play.

However, OWU would regain the control and push the lead back out to 16, 64-48, at the 8:23 mark. Nonetheless, the Yeomen would not go away quietly as a 10-1 Oberlin surge would put themselves back into striking distance at 65-58 with 6:17 left to expire.

Down the stretch Oberlin would twice get within six points, the last of which came on a pair of Silverman-Lloyd free throws to make it 74-68 with 88 ticks remaining in the game. Unfortunately, the Yeomen would get no closer the rest of the way as OWU was able to finish off the victory and salvage a season series split.

The loss dropped the Yeomen back to an even 10-10 on the year and 6-7 in league play. The setback also marked the fourth straight home loss for Oberlin as they are now just 3-6 on remodeled Philips Gym floor. OWU heads back to Delaware, Ohio at 11-9 overall and match Oberlin at 6-7 in the NCAC.

The Yeomen, who outscored the Bishops 43-36 in the second half, finished the night 26-of-57 (45.6%) from the floor, while OWU made 26 of its 53 shots for a 49.1 percent clip.

Oberlin will look to solve its home-game hiccups on Saturday afternoon when the Big Red of Denison invade Philips Gym. Tip-time is set for 3 p.m.
