Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to the visiting Case Western Reserve Spartans on Saturday night at Fred Shults Field.
The Spartans jumped on the Yeomen early, but after the opening 10 minutes of action the match was evenly contested the rest of the way.
Case would score twice within the first nine minutes of play to create some early separation. The first tally came courtesy of Garrett Winter as he sliced his way through the Yeomen backline before sending one past
Fiachra McDonagh. A mere 3:40 later, it was Nathan Ekberg who pushed forward on a corner and headed a ball off a Yeomen defender that deflected into the back of the net to increase the cushion.
The Yeomen would eventually settle in and create some upward movement of their own as the half bore on but had nothing materialize.
Jiadi Cheng and
Spencer Wright each had a pair of attempts that came up empty.
The second half started with a fury for both sides. After a grouping of key saves by McDonagh, first-year
Thomas Kanter would challenge McDongah's counterpart, Charlie Fink, but the Spartans' netminder was there to answer the call.
In the 74
th minute a foul on the edge of the 18-yard box gave
Trenton Bulucea a chance at a free kick, but his service deflected off the Spartans' wall and out of bounds.
Five minutes later, the Spartans would cap the game's scoring as Zachary Senft dribbled around his marker on the end line and rifled home a left-footed strike to the upper-90 of the cage to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
McDonagh continued his impressive start to the year, adding seven saves to his account to move his season total to 27.
The Spartans (3-1-0) finished with a slight 15-12 edge in shots, including a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. They also doubled up the Yeomen in corners, 4-2.
Oberlin (0-4-0) will look for its first win of the season when it welcomes Grove City to town on Wednesday night. The first touch is set for 7 p.m.
