Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Falls Late to Grove City

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team suffered a gut-wrenching 2-1 defeat to the visiting Grove City College Wolverines on Wednesday night at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

The match appeared to be heading to extra time as the two foes were knotted at 1-1, but the Wolverines had one last push to secure the victory in fulltime. With 90 seconds to play, Nate Curry lifted a corner kick service into the box to Christian Caporaso and he volleyed in the game-winner.

After a scoreless first half, the Yeomen would get on the board first in the 61st minute as a foul in the box led to a penalty opportunity for Julian Klingen. The sophomore from Washington, D.C. stepped up to the spot and buried a left-footed strike into the back of the net for his first-career goal, and to stake the Yeomen to their first lead of the season.

The Wolverines nearly found the equalizer in the 72nd minute as a rebounding shot left Fiachra McDonagh out of position, but defender Ryan Kim was there to help as he batted away Alex Chen's put back attempt.

Unfortunately, the game-tying tally would come less than four minutes later as Curry's long-range strike deflected off a Yeomen defender and changed the path of the ball just enough to sneak under the arms of McDonagh.

Oberlin triggered five of their six corners in the second half but had nothing materialize off the opportunities, which ultimately left the door open for the Wolverines to escape town with the win.

The Yeomen and Wolverines were feeling each other out through a physical first half that featured nine fouls. Neither side created many dangerous threats during the session. The lone shot on frame came courtesy of Jack McMillin, but his 25-yard strike from the top of the box was turned away by Wolverines keeper Luke Greenway.

Grove City had a promising chance in the 27th minute as Caporaso raced by the Yeomen defense along the far-left side, but a charging McDonagh forced him to push his flick attempt to the right of the post to keep the match scoreless at the intermission.

On the night, Grove City (3-0-2) outshot the Yeomen 12-8, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.

Oberlin (0-5-0) is back in action on Saturday night as it travels to Ada, Ohio, to take on the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears at 7:30 p.m.
