Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College field hockey team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
The Yeowomen struggled to create many scoring chances as they were outshot 21-5, which included an 11-1 OWU advantage in shots on goal.
The Bishops controlled the run of play for the majority of the first half, putting six of their 11 shots on goal.
Kennedy Kline turned away four attempts in the frame, while
Lea Watkins-Chow also added a key defensive save.
However, OWU would ultimately get on the board in the 28
th minute as Alexis Roberts was awarded a penalty stroke and lifted her ninth goal of the season into the upper left corner of the cage.
Oberlin earned a pair of late corners, but the Bishops' backline defended off both chances as shots by
Amelia Huang and
Elizabeth Modahl were both blocked.
Less than two minutes into the second half OWU would add an insurance goal as Barbara Welling found space in the arc and lifted a shot over the outstretched arms of Kline.
Oberlin continued to fight, responding by earning a pair of corners and creating some scoring opportunities.
Libby Royer and Modahl each slung shots wide of frame, while
Jenna Gyimesi had her flick attempt batted away by OWU keeper Paige Ross.
Oberlin's defense stood tall down the stretch as Watkins-Chow added a second defensive save while Kline tacked on three more saves to finish with seven in the match.
The loss dropped Oberlin back to 1-9 on the year and 0-6 in the NCAC. OWU heads home at 6-3 and 3-3 in league play.
The Yeowomen are back in action tomorrow at high noon as The College of Wooster Fighting Scots will invade the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex for another conference clash.
