Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Yeomen Notch First Win Against Wittenberg

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team earned a commanding 2-0 victory over the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers in front of a large alumni-based crowd on Saturday night at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

The victory marked the first of the season for the Yeomen as they moved to 1-9 overall but are an all-important 1-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with a possible 21 points still left to be claimed.

Oberlin's attacking style in the first 45-minute frame resulted in a 2-0 lead at the intermission. The first Oberlin tally in the 11th minute was a thing of beauty as senior Trenton Bulucea slotted a perfectly placed through-ball in the seam to Jack McMillin and he would do the rest – blowing by a pair of Tiger defenders before beating a charging Jack Snider out of the goal. The score was his the second of the year and 14th of his career.

After seeing an early chance sail just wide of the post, first-year Nic Jandeleit would open his collegiate account as he took a long service from McMillin and buried his first-career goal to give Oberlin its first two-goal advantage of the season.

In the 13th minute, Brian James nearly benefitted from a fortunate bounce that caused Snider to leave the goal exposed, but a Tigers' defender was there to knock away his shot attempt. Oberlin put four of its six first-half shots on frame.

While the Yeomen were unable to find a third goal in the second half, they still kept up the offensive pressure and developed a plethora of chances. A header off a setpiece by McMillin forced Snider into making an acrobatic save in the 51st minute. Bulucea and Michael Candelori would also challenge the Tigers' netminder to make a play in the period.

The Yeomen ended the match with a 12-9 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Oberlin also earned seven corners compared to Wittenberg's three.

The physical affair featured 30 fouls and four yellow cards being dealt out with three going to the Tigers.

Fiachra McDonagh played all 90 minutes and made four saves to notch his first clean sheet of the season and second of his career.

Oberlin is back in action next Saturday as it travels to Hiram College. The opening touch is set for 1 p.m.
