Hiram, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Hiram College on Saturday afternoon.
The Yeomen won the battle of the statistics, but the Terriers made the most of their opportunities scoring twice on their five shots on goal. Oberlin ended with a 12-10 edge in shots, including a 7-5 margin in shots on goal. Furthermore, Oberlin triggered 11 corners compared to Hiram's 1.
Hiram's Isaac Opoku wasted no time staking the Terriers to an early lead as he deposited the game's first goal just 3:02 into the contest. The Yeomen would respond in the 10
th minute as
Trenton Bulucea sent in his team-leading fourth goal of the year to tie the match at 1-1.
Moments later, a header from
Jack McMillin was turned away by Terriers goalie CJ Keith. The Oberlin front continued to pressure the Hiram backline as
Nic Jandeleit rifled one off the post in the 14
thminute, but it was Hiram who ultimately found the go-ahead goal. Giovanni Meza beat Oberlin's
Fiachra McDonagh to put them on top for good.
Early in the second half, Oberlin nearly found the equalizer as
Spencer Wright rapped a shot off the crossbar and five minutes later
Jiadi Cheng had an attempt that was kept out of the net by a Hiram defender.
The Yeomen continued to scratch for a potential game-tying tally but nothing would materialize as they fell back to 1-10 on the year and 1-2 in the NCAC. Hiram moved to 1-9-1 and 1-2 in league play.
McDonagh made three saves in the setback to run his season account to 64.
Oberlin is back in action on Wednesday night at home against Denison University. The first touch is set for 7 p.m.
