Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day with a 13-2 victory over the visiting Wabash College Little Giants on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Prior to the match, the Yeomen honored their nine senior members:
John Pierce,
Steve Kelleher,
Daniel Pardee,
John Sutherland,
Brendan Sheehan,
Sean Somerville,
Reese Koburov,
Ian McCague, and
Jorden Mandel.
The victory snapped a seven-game losing skid for the Yeomen as they moved their record to 6-7 overall and 1-5 in the NCAC.
A total of 10 Yeomen scored in the game with the senior duo of Sutherland and McCague each posting two tallies.
It took the Yeomen some time to get on the board, but it finally happened at the 8:48 mark of the first quarter as
Jake Parentis deposited a feed from Kelleher that came from the X-position. Koburov would make it a 2-0 Yeomen lead after one quarter with his 18th goal of the season.
Oberlin would tack on three more goals in the second quarter as Pierce,
Jay Messina, and
Thomas Berle Carman each found the back of the net to make it a 5-0 lead at the intermission. Kelleher notched his second assist of the game and 10
th of the season on Messina's goal, while
Will Prangley setup Berle Carman on a man-up opportunity.
Sutherland opened the third-quarter scoring with his first goal of the day before
Erik Zeug followed with his second tally of the season after scooping up the ensuing face-off and racing down the seam for a goal.
Wabash would get on the board at the 4:46 mark, but McCague closed the quarter with his first tally of the game to make it an 8-1 Yeomen advantage.
The Yeomen would finish off the victory with five fourth-quarter goals as Sutherland, McCague, Berle Carman, Prangley, and
Griffin Cappelletti each got one past Wabash goalie Max Atkins, who finished with 22 saves.
The Yeomen finished with a 53-22 advantage in shots, including a 35-8 advantage in shots on goal. Oberlin won 12 of the game's 17 face-offs and was successful on 18-of-20 clear opportunities. OC also had a 35-24 edge in ground balls as Koburov led the way with a team-high of four.
All three Yeomen goalies saw time in the contest as the senior Mandel earned the start and played just over 10 minutes. Sophomore
Calvin Filson, who earned the win, played 38:41 and made all six Yeomen saves.
Oberlin has a pair of road games left on its schedule with the first being on Tuesday night at Hiram College at 7 p.m.
