Alliance, Ohio – For the second straight game, the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team rallied from a big deficit to earn a come-from-behind victory as the Yeomen scored four unanswered goals to closeout a 9-8 overtime triumph at the University of Mount Union on Saturday afternoon.
On Wednesday it was senior
Ian McCague who buried the game-winner against Thiel, but today it was the rookie
Tom Decker who sent the Yeomen home happy as he cashed in the game-winning goal with the help of a
Jay Messina assist with 48 seconds left in the extra session.
The Yeomen trailed 8-5 with 10:44 left to play, but they never gave up and continued to attack the Purple Raiders' backline. Senior
Steve Kelleher sent in his second goal of the game at the 8:49 mark and
Reese Koburov would cut the margin down to just one three minutes later. Kelleher would ultimately provide the equalizer at the 3:42 mark to cap off his hat trick performance.
Oberlin trailed 7-3 going into the fourth quarter, but immediately started the comeback bid with two scores within the first 90 seconds of the frame. Koburov deposited the first of three late-game assists by Messina and
Regan Chasney would follow with an unassisted goal less than a minute later. A goal from Mount Union's Thomas Ravlin temporally halted the Yeomen run to make it 8-5, but the Yeomen kept coming to steal away the victory and move to 4-0 on the year.
Messina led the Yeomen with four points. Face-off specialist
Max McAllister scooped up a game-high eight ground balls and went 11-of-21 on the draw. Sophomore goalie
Calvin Filson turned away eight shots in the win.
The Purple Raiders posted the first two goals of the game, but rookie
Thomas Berle Carman would get the Yeomen on the board at the 9:35 mark of the opening quarter.
A man-up finish from Messina with the help of a
John Sutherland assist made it a 3-2 Mount Union advantage with 4:19 left to play in the opening half, but the Yeomen offense would go stagnant from there as the Purple raiders ballooned their lead out to 6-2 midway through the third period to set the stage for Oberlin's thrilling comeback.
Oberlin finished with a 42-31 advantage in shots and were successful on 15-of-18 clear opportunities.
The Yeomen are back in action on Tuesday night as they welcome La Roche College to the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex. The opening face-off is set for 7 p.m.
