Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team ran its record to 5-0 with a commanding 28-1 victory over the visiting La Roche College RedHawks on Tuesday night at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
A total of 17 Yeomen scored in the game with senior Steve Kelleher leading the way with four goals and four assists. Jay Messina added three goals and three helpers, while John Sutherland, Matthew Barry, Tom Decker, Reese Koburov, Alec Palmiotti, and Griffin Cappelletti chipped in with two goals each in the triumph
Oberlin also dished out a season-high 18 assists with Regan Chasney adding three while Dan Nerenhausen and Sutherland contributed two helpers in the win.Â
The Yeomen scored 21 first-half goals, including 13 in the first quarter as they set the tone early and never looked back.Â
Oberlin finished with a 47-6 advantage in shots and held a 53-22 margin in ground balls. The Yeomen's sweltering defense forced the RedHawks into 30 turnovers as they went just 9-of-15 on clears. The Yeomen were successful on 20-of-34 clear opportunities.Â
Senior Brendan Sheehan, who went 9-of-12 on face-offs, led the Yeomen with eight ground balls. All three Yeomen goalies saw time in the game with Calvin Filson working the first quarter, while rookie Erik Schultz worked the second and third quarters before senior Jorden Mandel took over in the fourth.Â
The Yeomen will have their toughest test of the season on Saturday afternoon as they welcome No. 15 Ohio Wesleyan to Bailey Field for a 1 p.m. tilt.
