Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team controlled the run of play for most of the night, but in the end, it was the visiting Denison University Big Red who left town with a 2-1 win over the Yeomen.
The difference in the match was a second-half setpiece in the 73
rd minute as 6-foot-3 defender David Jaben pushed up field and used height advantage to head in a service from Luke Summers.
Despite the outcome, the Yeomen had their chances throughout the contest, finishing with a 12-9 advantage in shots, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Oberlin also had five corner chances compared to Denison's three.
Denison held the possession early and would ultimately breakthrough for the game's first goal as a nice combination play led to Braden Adamson finishing off a cross from Matt Rush in the 15
th minute of action.
The Yeomen put together a handful of promising runs in the first half that never materialized.
Julian Klingen had a header go into the breadbasket of Denison keeper Dylan Brown and moments later
Nic Jandeleit rapped a 25-yard shot from the middle of the pitch that sailed high over the crossbar.
David Shostak also put a shot on frame, while Jandeleit had a last-minute strike go wide of frame.
The Yeomen would find the equalizer early in the second session as sophomore
Michael Candelori deposited his first-career goal with the help of a Jandeleit feed.
Following what proved to be the game-winning goal by Jaben the Yeomen fought to tie it in the final 18 minutes, but two shot attempts by
Jiadi Cheng were off target.
The Big Red moved to 4-6-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the NCAC while Oberlin fell to 1-11-0 and 1-3-0 in league play.
The Yeomen will look for their second league win of the season on Saturday night as they welcome the College of Wooster for a 7 p.m. showdown.
