Field Hockey Falls to Tigers in Final Home Contest

Oberlin, Ohio — The Oberlin College field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision to the DePauw University Tigers in its final game of the season on Bailey Field, Sunday afternoon.

Despite DePauw  putting nine of its 14 first half shots on cage the Yeowomen back line held its ground. Led by senior keeper Kennedy Kline who recorded eight saves in the half and with the help of her classmate Emma Broun made a defensive save to keep the game scoreless at halftime.

The Tigers broke through the Oberlin back line early in the second frame as they netted two goals in the opening seven minutes of the period to break the game open. Cathy Zesiger finished off her own rebound on the Tigers first goal with 31:52 on the clock and three minutes later Corina Bourantas fired a slap shot that beat the Oberlin keeper off a nice through ball by Alexa Steil.

The Tigers would tack on two insurance goals in the final 11 minutes of the game, but the Yeowomen threatened in the latter minutes which led to an Oberlin scoring opportunity. Libby Royer took the mid-range shot at the 3:38 mark that was unfortunately knocked down by a Tigers defender.

The DePauw offense was very efficient all day as they put 19 of its 30 shots on target, forcing Kline to make 13 saves in the game. The Philadelphia product now has 433 career saves and 157 in her final season. Broun and Royer each recorded defensive saves in the setback.

The Tigers complete their weekend road trip to Ohio with a 9-8 overall record and 5-6 mark in conference play, while the Yeowomen are now 1-15 and winless against NCAC competition.

The Yeowomen wrap up their 2018 season with two conference road games next week. Oberlin faces the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and on Saturday they take on the The College of Wooster Fighting Scots at 11 a.m.
