Oberlin, Ohio – A late comeback bid by Oberlin College fell short as the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots held on for a 2-1 victory on Saturday night at Fred Shults Field.
All of the game's scoring came in the second half as Manny Burton opened his two-goal night in the 48
th minute, finishing off an assist from Max Rochester.
Nic Jandeleit nearly found the equalizer 10 minutes later as he created space for himself inside the box on the right side and lifted a left-footed strike over the crossbar.
After a few more promising runs that didn't materialize for the Yeomen, it was the Scots who would score again as a foul in the box led to a Wooster penalty kick for Burton and he would make it 2-0 in the 73
rd minute.
The Yeomen picked up their offense intensity down the stretch and eventually broke through as senior
Noah Binford pushed up field and buried a long-distance goal for his first-career tally to cut the deficient in half with just over three minutes left to play. Classmate
Trenton Bulucea set him up for the goal.
Oberlin had one last charge in them as
David Shostak headed a ball wide of frame in the 88
th minute and
Brian James had his last-second shot saved by Will Collis to preserve the win for Wooster.
The Scots controlled possession throughout much of the first half, working their way towards five corner kick tries and an 8-2 shot advantage.
However, it was the Yeomen who nearly struck first as Jandeleit found space and challenged Collis to come off his line to make play in the eighth minute.
With the ball in their offensive third for much of the session, Wooster made
Fiachra McDonagh be active during the frame and he answered the call with two first-half saves to keep the match scoreless at the intermission.
The Scots finished with a 17-10 advantage in shots, including a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Wooster also ended with a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
McDonagh finished with five saves in the setback to run his season account to 54.
Wooster moved to 5-6-2 overall and moved to 1-3-1 in the NCAC. Oberlin fell back to 1-12-0 and 1-4-0.
The Yeomen are back in action on Wednesday night at Allegheny College. The first touch is set for 7:30 p.m.
