Oberlin, Ohio – Wooster's Antonio Bailey 5-yard TD run with six seconds left to play in the fourth quarter lifted the Fighting Scots to a 27-21 win over the Oberlin College Yeomen on Saturday afternoon at Dick Bailey Field.
While the outcome was certainly disheartening for the Oberlin faithful, it wasn't all bad as junior quarterback
Zach Taylor continued his march up the record books, moving into second all-time in career passing yards (5,592) and passing touchdowns (43). He bested the marks set by Lucas Poggiali (5,508 / 2012-15) and Josh Mandel (42 / 2008-12).
Despite being under duress all game long and suffering six sacks, Taylor still threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns. The Artesia, California, native completed 16-of-34 attempts, but was also intercepted twice.
Senior
Ryan Gleeson continued his torrid pace, snagging eight balls for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Classmate
Jabari Clemons recorded 69 yards on six catches.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Yeomen would score the game's first touchdown with 8:40 left in the opening half as Taylor found freshman
Brian Colarusso in the back of the end zone for a 7-yard scoring strike to cap off a 13-play, 80-yard drive. It was the first-career TD catch for the rookie from Glenshaw, Pennsylvania.
Following a couple big stops by the Oberlin defense, which included a Wooster fumble and 4
th-down stop by the Yeomen, Oberlin would have one last chance to increase its lead before halftime after taking over at their own 36-yard line with 28 seconds left. The Yeomen would waste no time as Taylor connected with Gleeson on a deep post on the very first play of the drive for a 64-yard touchdown to increase the OC cushion to 14-0 at the intermission.
Unfortunately, all of the Oberlin momentum evaporated in what seemed like a blink of an eye in the third quarter. Just two plays into the period, Scots quarterback Mateo Renteria found tight end Jacob Lewis on a wheel route for a 58-yard TD.
A quick 3-and-out by the Yeomen coupled with a 14-yard punt setup the Scots with great field position at the Yeomen 27-yard line. Four plays later, Seth Burke rumbled in from 13 yards out and the game was even at 14.
To make matters worse, Oberlin would fumble the ensuing kickoff to give the ball right back to the Scots at the 26-yard line. Nick Strausbaugh would cap the short jaunt to paydirt, hauling in a 6-yard TD reception from Renteria to give the Scots a 21-14 advantage with 9:53 left to play in the third quarter.
Oberlin would eventually regroup late in the third quarter, putting together an impressive 99-yard scoring drive that took the final 3:11 of the frame. The 8-play march featured 76 yards from Gleeson, including the game-tying 37-yard touchdown reception.
The final frame opened with each team trading fumbles and both offenses stalling out on their respective opportunities the rest of the way.
A 60-yard punt by
Christian Arnold gave the ball back to the Scots with 2:40 left to play at their own 28-yard line and they methodically worked the ball down the field against the Yeomen defense and ultimately punched it in to escape town with the win.
Wooster finished with 471 yards of total offense compared to the Yeomen's 344. The Scots also won the first-down battle, 30-24.
Devin White led the Oberlin defense with 15 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Khalid McCalla matched
Justin Godfrey with nine stops, while Godfrey also had a forced fumble. Senior
Kenny Williams added eight tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble.
Oberlin is back in action on Saturday afternoon at Wabash College. The opening kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
