Crawfordsville, IN — The Oberlin College football team started strong, but the high-powered Wabash College Little Giants scored 32 unanswered points to prevail, 32-7, at Hollett Little Giant Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Despite the defeat the Yeomen had some bright spots as junior quarterback
Zach Taylor continued his climb up the record book. The California native recorded 242 all-purpose yards to put him six yards shy of Greg Mangan's school record for total offense. Taylor completed 29 of his 54 attempts for 244 yards to finish the game with a quarterback rating of 94.1.
Freshman
Brandon Davies had a career day for the Yeomen as he caught 12 passes for 87 yards, including the lone TD for Oberlin. In addition, seniors
Ryan Gleeson and
Jabari Clemons each caught six balls, as Gleeson finished with 65 receiving yards and Clemons recorded 54. On the ground,
Chuck Williams led the rushers with 18 attempts for 56 yards.
The Yeomen got off to the start they wanted as the defense forced a three-and-out giving the Yeomen the ball at their own 35. Taylor and the offense methodically orchestrated a 14-play, 65-yard drive capped by a Davies 4-yard TD reception. The freshman's first career touchdown gave the Yeomen a 7-0 lead with 9:30 left in the opening quarter.
Unfortunately for the Yeomen the Little Giants held Oberlin scoreless the rest of the way. Oberlin pushed into Wabash territory on four different drives but, could not capitalize. Two of the drives ended in turnovers, while the other two stalled out leading to a punt and a turnover on downs.
On the other side of the ball,
Devin White led the team with 10 tackles.
Jabree Hason and
Kenny Williams each added nine tackles for Oberlin. Williams led the team with five tackles for a loss.
The Yeomen fall to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while the Little Giants improve to 6-1 and 5-1 in league play.
The Yeomen will look to break its five-game losing skid next Saturday when they welcome the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops to town. It will be Senior Day on Bailey Field with the opening kickoff set for 1 p.m.
