Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – The Oberlin College volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches at Chatham University.
Chatham Match
The Yeowomen dropped their first match in straight sets against Chatham University. The Cougars defeated Oberlin by scores of 20-25, 21-25 and 24-26.
Offensively, Oberlin was led by sophomores
Lexi Mitchell and
McLean Sammon as they each earned a team-high seven kills. Sammon's seven kills was a career-high for the second year player.
On the defensive side of the net, junior
Emily Kelkar tallied a team-high nine digs and Mitchell totaled seven.
The first set was tied on seven different occasions, but a late surge by the Chatham offense would give them the 25-20 victory.
In game two, the Yeowomen had its largest lead of the game when Mitchell served an ace to make the score 11-8. The Cougars broke a 13-13 tie and would lead the remainder of the way to take the set 25-21.
In a back and fourth final set, the Yeowomen took the lead late when Mitchell recorded a kill to make the score 21-20. After Chatham regained the lead, Oberlin fought back to make the score 24-24, but the Cougars scored the final two points of the game to win the match.
Pitt-Greensburg Match
The Yeowomen defeated The University of Pitt-Greensburg in straight sets. Oberlin won by scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-14.
Oberlin, who recorded 16 more kills in their second match of the day, was led by senior
Dana Thomas and Mitchell as they totaled a team-high eight kills each. Sophomore
Maura Gibbs also accounted for six kills. Sophomore setter
Samantha Lam set up the outside hitters and finished the game with 29 assists.
Kelkar once again led the team defensively with eight digs and Mitchell tallied seven more the nightcap.
After trailing 4-0 in the opening set, Oberlin went on a 9-4 run that was sparked by a Gibbs kill that got the Yeowomen on the board. Oberlin led the remainder of the game.
In set two, the Yeowomen led up until the Bobcats knotted the set at 11-11. Oberlin answered with a 6-2 run that would lead them to a 25-19 victory.
The Yeowomen led the whole time in the final frame and earned its largest lead on the final point when Pitt-Greensburg committed a service error to give Oberlin the match.
The Yeowomen are back on the hardwood tomorrow when they play a pair of non-conference games against Earlham College and LaRoche College on day two of its trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
