Grove City, PA – The Oberlin College men's soccer team played the Grove City Wolverines to a, 1-1, double overtime draw on Wednesday afternoon at College Field.
The regionally ranked foes played a high-paced physical battle as they combined for 44 shots and 38 fouls. The Wolverines got whistled for 24 infractions, which included one yellow card.
After surrendering an early goal just 21 seconds into the contest, the Yeomen got on the board in the 27
th minute when junior midfielder
Trenton Bulucea sent a pass up the middle that gave
Timothy Williams a one-on-one that he buried off the right post to even the match. For Williams, it was his eighth goal of the season and 21
st of his career.
Oberlin, who went into halftime outshooting Grove City 11-9, had a chance to take the lead before the intermission when freshman
Michael Candelori fired a shot that hit the post in the 44
th minute.
Early in the second half, senior
Matthew Bach-Lombardo had a set piece opportunity that got turned away by Grove City keeper Malcolm Blake.
Each team had promising scoring chances, but none would come to fruition as Oberlin went to overtime for the first time this season.
In the first stanza of extra time, the Yeomen had two chances to find the game winner as first-year
Michael Candelori and junior
Brian James both had their shots attempts corralled by Blake.
With over 100 minutes expired, Oberlin continued to fight for a three-point result and a key regional win. With just over a minute to play, a long service into the box by Bach-Lombardo would find the feet of Williams who quickly turned and rifled a shot towards the goal that forced Blake to dive to his left to preserve the tie.
Blake finished with five saves for Grove City, but the Yeomen's
Connor English was equally impressive he made a season-high seven stops in 110 minutes of action to run his season total to 9.
Oberlin returns home at 3-1-1, while Grove City remained unbeaten at 3-0-2.
The Yeomen will have another key non-conference match-up on Saturday night when they welcome the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern to Fred Shults Field. The opening touch is set for 7 p.m.
