Granville, Ohio – The Denison University Big Red proved why they are one of the best teams in the country, living up to their No. 10 ranking as they cruised by the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team 21-5 on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Red posted eight first-quarter goals to set the tone early and never looked back, adding five in the second, and four in each of the final two quarters.
Senior
Eric Hager secured three points on two goals and an assist to run his team-lead point total to 34. Junior
Ian McCague also had a pair of goals in the setback.
Jake Waxter opened the game's scoring with his 12
th tally of the year, but Hager quickly got the Yeomen back to even at 1-1. Unfortunately, the Big Red would rip off nine straight goals to build a 10-1 lead before Oberlin was able to get back on the board.
It was McCague who cashed in a feed from
Jack Fabrizio at the 7:56 mark of the second quarter to halt the Denison run. The second Yeomen goal of the quarter came courtesy of rookie
Regan Chasney as he finished off a pass from
Steve Kelleher to make it 11-3.
The Yeomen were only able to score one goal in each of the final two quarters and never threatened the final outcome. In the third, McCague sent in a pass from Hager, while in the fourth Hager would deposit his 17
th score of the season.
A total of 12 Big Red players scored in the game led by Will Donahue's four-goal performance.
Kinori Rosnow won 10-of-30 face-offs and added a team-high six ground balls.
In goal, rookie
Calvin Filson saw 43 shots from the Big Red and made 10 saves.
The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in the NCAC. Denison improved to 9-1 and remained perfect in conference play at 4-0.
The Yeomen will be back in action on Wednesday night when they welcome Kenyon College to town for a 7 p.m. conference clash.
