Scoreless Second Quarter Pushes Yeomen to Loss at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio - Oberlin College men's lacrosse had their three game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon with a 21-6 defeat at the hands of the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops.

The Bishops captured the game's first goal just 4:26 into the bout and tacked on two more before the Yeomen could find the back of the OWU net. A goal from Reese Koburov, coupled with stymy defense from the Yeomen and quality saves from first-year goalie Calvin Filson in net made the score 3-1 after the opening quarter.

OWU cut the game open in the second with a big quarter offensively and a goalless period from the Crimson and Gold men. The OWU seven-goal second-quarter spurt pushed the score to 10-1 at the halftime break.

Out of the intermission, the Bishops added to the Oberlin deficit with two goals to open the third quarter, but Jack Fabrizio stopped the bleeding with Oberlin's second score of the match. The Bishops responded, but the Yeomen immediately struck back with another tally from Koburov.

Koburov's second of the game was followed by five more OWU scores to make the scoreline, 18-3 heading into the fourth. The Bishops opened the frame with a goal just 2:20 into the period. The Yeomen followed with three unanswered goals but it was too little too late. Koburov began the run and completed his hat-trick to make the score 19-4.

Koburov then assisted the Yeomen's fifth score of the day, a Zach Lipkin goal coming in with 6:54 remaining in regulation. Minutes later Lipkin doubled up with a little help from Eric Hager. With the scoreline at 19-6, OWU shutdown the Yeomen's scoring run.

Face-off specialist Kinori Rosnow, who entered the match with the country's tenth best face-off percentage, 70.1%, finished 18-of-29 (62.0%) against a handful of opposing Bishops. His performance on Saturday moves is season total to 127-of-183 (69.4%). Rosnow posted a team-high 11 groundballs, making his sixth consecutive double-digit groundball performance.

Koburov led the Oberlin attack and was the Yeomen's top point-getter against the Bishops with three goals on nine shots, with one assists. The Woodridge, Illinois native also scooped up one groundball in the loss.

Lipkin's two scores against the high-powered Bishops marks the first collegiate goals for the Doylestown, Pennsylvania native. He posted his two goals on seven shots. Fabrizio's goal in the loss marks his seventh of the year after a multi-goal performance on Wednesday in a comfortable win over Thiel College.

Filson faced a bombardment in goal, but finished with 13 stops on the day, his fourth double-figure save performance of the campaign.

The Oberlin men will return to action on Saturday, March 5 when they travel down to Springfield, Ohio to tangle with the Wittenberg University Tigers. The opening face-off from Springfield is slated for 1 p.m.
