Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team evened its record at 3-3, defeating the Thiel College Tomcats, 13-6, on a blistering cold Wednesday evening at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Jack Fabrizio and
Regan Chasney each registered hat tricks to lead the Yeomen scoring punch, while
Steve Kelleher,
Eric Hager, and
Kinori Rosnow each added a pair.
The Yeomen led 3-0 after one period with Fabrizio cashing in the game's first two scores, before the rookie Chasney followed with his fifth tally of the season.
Early in the second session, upperclassmen Hager and Kelleher would get into the act to make it a 5-0 Yeomen lead before the Tomcats got on the board. It was Jared Saffer who netted the first Thiel goal of the night, but Chasney and
Reese Koburov answered back to make it a 7-1 Yeomen advantage at the intermission.
The Yeomen would take an eight-goal advantage into the final period as the third quarter featured the first tallies of the season for Rosnow. Following a Thiel goal he would win the ensuing face-off and race down the middle of the field and send home his first score of the season. Fabrizio would complete his hat trick performance, while Rosnow would net the frame's final tally to make it 11-3 Yeomen.
The final outcome was never in doubt in the fourth quarter as Chasney completed his three-goal effort, while Hager netted his second score of the night.
Freshman goalie
Calvin Filson had his best game as a Yeomen, finishing with a career-best 12 saves in the win.
Rosnow scooped up a game-high 12 ground balls and finished 17-of-20 at the face-off X as he now sits at 70.7 percent on the season with 109 wins on 154 draws.
Defensively, Oberlin caused eight turnovers led by
Sean Somerville who created two takeaways, while rookie
Erik Zeug guided the backline with five ground balls.
Overall, Oberlin won the ground ball battle 44-30 and out-shot its Thiel counterpart 47-27, which included a 31-18 edge in shots on goal.
The Yeomen return to action on March 18 as they open North Coast Athletic Conference play at Ohio Wesleyan University. The opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
