Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team trailed by as many as four goals in the first half, but the Yeomen rallied to defeat the visiting Mount Union Purple Raiders, 11-9, on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Junior
Reese Koburov led the Oberlin attack with four goals, while
Jay Messina, and
Regan Chasney each added a pair.
The Yeomen trailed 3-2 after the first period with goals coming from Messina and Chasney. The Purple Raiders would grab a 7-3 lead with just 1:39 left in the first half, but the Yeomen closed the half strong as
Jack Fabrizio and
Eric Hager each found the back of the net in the span of seven seconds to cut the deficit down to two, 7-5, at the intermission.
The second half was nip-and-tuck as the final 30 minutes were played almost entirely with a one-goal differential on the scoreboard.
Steve Kelleher's sixth score of the season less than three minutes into the third quarter had the Yeomen within one. They were later trailing 8-6, but back-to-back Koburov finishes within a minute span tied the game.
The two teams went into the final frame even at 8-8. Mount Union's Brent Greenberg would finish off a feed from Derek Thomas at the 13:23 mark to put them back out in front, but the Yeomen defense would buckle down and keep them scoreless the rest of the way.
Chasney, a freshman from Towson, Maryland, netted the game-tying goal while it was Messina, who provided the go-ahead score and ultimate game-winner with 8:44 left to play. Moments later Koburov would cap-off his career-best four-goal game, sending in a pass from
Ian McCague for a clutch insurance tally.
Down the stretch the Yeomen backline kept the Raiders at bay and freshman goalie
Calvin Filson came away with a pair of key saves en route to finishing with eight stops in the win.
Senior captain
Kinori Rosnow was a force at the face-off X, winning 18-of-24 head-to-head battles, while scooping up 16 ground balls. Defensively,
Daniel Pardee and
Max Scott also finished with five ground balls each.
The Yeomen will be back in action at home on Wednesday night as they host Thiel College at 7 p.m.
