Men’s Basketball Stops Skid with a Win Over Kenyon

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team earned a long overdue win, defeating the visiting Kenyon College Lords, 80-60, on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.

After a plethora of close games throughout the season, the Yeomen were able to secure their first win since November 20 as they snapped a 19-game skid with their first conference victory of the season.

Four Yeomen finished in double figures led by freshman Andre Campbell who was 8-of-9 from the floor en route to a game-high 17 points. He has now scored 17 or more in four out of the last five games. Sophomore Eric Holt added 16 off the bench, while the backcourt duo of Jack Poyle (13) and Joshua Friedkin (10) combined for 23 points. Friedkin also added four assists and five steals in the triumph.

Oberlin jumped on the Lords right from the opening tip, building 20-5 lead just seven minutes into the contest. Campbell, who was a perfect 7-of-7 in the first half, cashed in a layup to make it 27-9 at the 9:32 mark.

The Lords would get as close as 13, but the Yeomen finished the half strong to take a 51-32 lead into the intermission. Oberlin shot a blistering 67.7 percent in the frame with 21 makes on 31 attempts, which included a 6-of-12 performance from beyond the arc.

The game was never really in doubt in the second half as Oberlin ballooned the margin to 30, 70-40, with 11:10 left to play. Moments later back-to-back threes from the Lords had the gap down to 24, 74-50, but it was too little too late to be any real threat.

A total of 11 different Lords scored in the game, but none reached double figures as Bennett Grigull led the way with nine points.

Oberlin finished with a 39-36 edge on the glass and outscored Kenyon 40-22 in the paint.

The Yeomen shot a season-high 56.1 percent, hitting on a season-best 32 field goals on 57 attempts. The Lords finished at 36.5 percent (23-of-63), marking the lowest success rate of any Oberlin opponent this season.

The Yeomen will look to make it two in row when they cross state lines to take on Wabash College on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
