Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Yeomen Suffer Another Heartbreaker

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team suffered a gut-wrenching, 69-68, loss to the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.

The Yeomen had a chance to win it in the closing seconds, but Jack Poyle's tough fade-away jumper from the near wing was short and the final seconds ticked off as the two teams scrambled for the rebound.

It was a nip-and-tuck battle for all 40 minutes as the game featured 14 lead changes and six ties along the way.

Oberlin led 68-67 with two minutes to go and after a 90-second scoreless spell, the Yeomen had a chance to go up three, but somehow a left-handed layup from Eli Silverman-Lloyd with 22 seconds on clock rolled off the rim into the hands of Spencer Williams. The Scots quickly pushed the ball up the floor and Milt Davis snuck inside for what proved to be the game-winning layup with 11 seconds left to play.

Four of the five Yeomen starters finished in double figures led by Poyle's 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. First-year Andre Campbell continued his torrid play with 17 points on 6-of-8 from the floor to go along with a game-high seven rebounds. Silverman-Lloyd added 13 points, while Joshua Friedkin added 10.

Oberlin trailed 64-58 with just under five minutes remaining in the game, but would use a 7-0 spurt that featured five points from Friedkin to go out in front by one at the 3:21 mark. From that point no more than a single tally would separate the two foes the rest of the way.

The Scots had built up 21-12 lead with 7:27 left to expire in the opening half, but the Yeomen would close the session with the momentum. A triple-hit from Silverman-Lloyd at the 3:18 mark had the gap down to two, 27-25. The sophomore from Culver City, California, would connect once more from the paint and Campbell would also add a layup from in tight as Oberlin trailed 30-29 at the break.

The Scots made one more field goal than the Yeomen hitting on 26-of-54 shots for a 48.1 percent clip, while Oberlin finished 25-of-54 for 46.3 percent.  The rebounding war was even on both sides with teams collecting 30 boards with eight coming on the offensive end.

Dan Fanelly led Wooster with 21 points while Williams was the only other Scot in double figures with 12 points.

Oberlin returns to action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Wittenberg University. Tip-time is set for 1 p.m.
