Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team held on to defeat the Wabash College Little Giants 1-0 for its third consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference at Fred Shults Field on Seniors' Day.
The Yeomen improve to 7-7-2 on the year and 3-4-0 in NCAC play, keeping their playoff hopes alive. Wabash drops to 9-5-1 and 3-3-1 in league action.
Oberlin was led by senior goalkeeper
Connor English who made six saves in the contest and faced 16 shots. English recorded his second shutout of the season and overall the Yeomen have posted clean sheets in the last three matches.
The Yeomen scored the lone goal of the game in the 21
th minute when senior
Jesse Lauritsen sent a ball into
Jack McMillin who settled it off his chest and fired a low shot past the Little Giants' keeper. The goal was McMillin's ninth goal of the season.
In the late stages of the first half, Wabash pushed up the field and got a couple of great opportunities, but English was up for the challenge. He made a pair of saves highlighted by diving denial to his left on a shot from the Little Giants' Abdoulie Waggeh in the 42
st minute.
In the beginning of the second half, Wabash would put pressure on the Yeomen back line again. The Little Giants had a great chance in the 69
th minute forcing English out of the net, but Lauritsen kicked the ball out of harm's way just before it crossed the end line. In the 77
th minute English's number was called again as he came out of cage and made a save on an attack by Wabash's Mike Gorse.
The Yeomen controlled the pace of play in the final 10 minutes and would get a couple late opportunities to add an insurance goal with the best coming off a cross from the midfield that senior
Ben Jennings headed just left of the net in the 85
th minute.
On the box score, the Yeomen put six shots on goal despite being outshot 16-14 and the Little Giants would also get one more opportunity from the corner than Oberlin.
Oberlin is back in action on Wednesday night when they make the trip to Gambier, Ohio to face the NCAC-leading Kenyon College Lords for a rematch of last year's NCAC Tournament Championship game. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
