Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team notched its second straight conference victory, knocking off the visiting Allegheny College Gators, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Fred Shults Field.
The victory marked the Yeomen's third clean sheet performance of the season with this one being led by freshman
Fiachra McDonagh, who made just his second start and third appearance of the season. The Beechhurst, New York, native was sensational as he made eight saves and came off his line multiple times to short-circuit a plethora of threats.
The Yeomen set the tone with two first-half goals to create some early separation. In the 23
rd minute, a beautifully slotted lead pass from senior
Jesse Lauritsen to
Jack McMillin put the Yeomen out in front as the local Oberlin native sent in his eighth goal of the season to the lower right corner of the goal.
Minutes before the halftime horn, sophomore
Jiadi Cheng finished off a beautiful give-and-go combination play in the box with
Wyeth Carpenter for his second goal of the season.
The Gators turned up the offensive pressure in the second half as they outshot the Yeomen 14-8 over the final 45-minute frame, but Oberlin's rearguard stood tall and was never penetrated for a goal.
Playing without leading scorer
Timothy Williams, the Yeomen got a boost of energy from other sources as first-years
Charlie Stube,
Michael Candelori, and
Spencer Wright all played valuable minutes.
The Gators finished with a 20-14 advantage in shots, but shots on goal were even at eight apiece. Allegheny also had a slight 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Yeomen moved to 6-7-2 overall and 2-4-0 in the NCAC, while Allegheny heads home at 3-10-1 and 0-5-1.
Oberlin will honor its senior class on Saturday afternoon as it plays host to Wabash College at 1 p.m.
