Men’s Soccer Falls in Physical Game at Denison

Granville, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team dropped a North Coast Athletic Conference game against Denison University by a score of 2-0 on Deeds Field at Piper Stadium.

In a first half where both teams battled for possession in the midfield, the Yeomen were outshot 5-2, but both teams were only able to get one shot on goal.

Unfortunately for Oberlin, the lone shot on goal for Denison came off the opening kickoff when Luis Zamora found Jordan Williams streaking down the middle of the field giving the Big Red a 1-0 lead 16 seconds into the game.

After the early goal, the Yeomen back line hunkered down and would not give Denison another good opportunity in the half.

Junior defender Matthew Bach-Lombardo looked to try and surprise the Big Red keeper on a direct kick in the 17th minute, but Jack Thomas was not fooled. A minute later, Wyeth Carpenter fired the final Yeomen shot of the half, but it sailed high keeping the Denison 1-0 lead intact at halftime.

In the early minutes of the second half, the Oberlin offense put pressure on the Denison defense firing two of the first three shots.

The Big Red answered the offensive pressure in the 56th minute when Zamaro chipped a ball over the Oberlin keepers' head to give Denison a two-goal lead.

After Denison's second goal of the contest the Yeomen played with urgency and tried to fight their way back into the game. Oberlin would outshoot the Big Red 5-1 in the remainder of the game and took the final three corner kicks of the night.

Sophomore midfielder David Shostak had the final good chance for the Yeomen, forcing Thomas to make his second save of the contest in the 83rd minute.

With the late surge of offense, Oberlin outshot Denison 9-8 with each team putting two shots on goal, and getting one more corner kick opportunity. It was a very physical game as their were 22 foul calls and four yellow cards distributed throughout the contest.

The Yeomen drop to 4-7-2 on the year and 0-4-0 in league play. Denison is now 5-6-1 and 2-1-1 in NCAC play.

Oberlin goes back on the road on Saturday to face The College of Wooster for at 3:30 p.m. start.
