Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team was one point away from a straight-set victory over the visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops, but things took a drastic turn as OWU battled back to win the match in five sets.
The Yeowomen took game one 25-16 and gutted out a 30-28 win in set two. The third set was nip-and-tuck throughout, but Oberlin had a 24-22 cushion only to see the Bishops rally for four consecutive points and a 26-24 win.
The Yeowomen were never able to recover from the momentum loss as OWU won the fourth set 25-19, before finishing off the comeback with a 15-6 win in the decisive fifth set.
Oberlin fell out of rhythm down the stretch - hitting a negative percentage in the final two sets - combining for eight kills and 11 errors. The Yeowomen also allowed the Bishops to hang around with 13 service errors in the match.
Lexi Mitchell and
Sara Chang led the Oberlin attack with 12 kills each, while
Maura Gibbs added 10 towards Oberlin's 50. Mitchell, who dropped in three aces, also had 13 digs in the setback.
Chang and
Samantha Lam split the setting duties with Lam dishing out 27 assists to go along with three aces, while Chang added 16 assists and seven digs to her stat line.
Emily Kelkar led the backline with 17 digs and added three aces to the team total of 11.
In the fifth set, the Bishops raced out to an 8-1 lead to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
The loss dropped the Yeowomen back to 9-7 overall and 0-2 in the NCAC. OWU moved to 9-4 and 2-1 in league action.
Oberlin is back in action on Friday night at Kenyon College. The first serve is set for 7 p.m.
