Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team scored a season-low 48 points, which allowed the visiting Little Giants of Wabash College to leave Philips Gym with a 58-48 win on Saturday afternoon.
The Yeomen struggled to find offensive consistency throughout the 40-minute affair, especially from long range as they connected on just 4-of-19 triple-tries for a 21.1 percent success rate.
Senior
Jack Poyle continued his climb up the all-time scoring list as finished with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting to run his career account to 1,023 – ranking him 23
rd in school history. The Avon, Ohio, native also added four steals, four rebounds and three assists.
Unfortunately, Poyle was the lone Yeoman to finish in double figures as sophomore
Eli Silverman-Lloyd was the next closest with nine points on a 4-of-7 effort. Rookies
Andre Campbell and
Joshua Friedkin each chipped in with six.
The Yeomen got off a quick start, grabbing an 8-2 lead in the early going, but they quickly cooled off as Wabash took control of the game. Oberlin was clinging to a 14-12 cushion with 8:20 left in the opening half, but would go scoreless for the next 4:20 as the Little Giants opened up a 21-14 advantage of their own.
A jumper from
Zach Meyers at the 2:35 mark had the Yeomen back within five at 23-18, but the Little Giants would close the frame by scoring six of the final eight points of the session to carry a 29-20 lead into the locker room.
In the second half the Little Giants would increase their advantage out to 12, 36-24, with 12:54 left in the game. However, the Yeomen came storming back, using a 16-6 run to get within two at 42-40 at the 6:43 mark. The spurt featured a pair of threes from Friedkin and one from Poyle.
Unfortunately, it took Wabash just over a minute to push the margin right back out to eight. The Yeomen continued to battle till the end, but were never able to get over the hump.
An old-fashioned 3-point play from Silverman-Lloyd had the deficit down to 52-47 with 50 seconds to go, but the Little Giants would hit all six of their free throw attempts down the stretch to ice the game away.
The free throw line ended up being the difference in the game as the Little Giants went 17-of-22 at the stripe for a 77.3 percent clip. The Yeomen finished at 80 percent, but took 12 less freebies, as they were 8-of-10.
Both teams hit 18 shots from the floor with Wabash attempting 48 for a 37.5 percent mark, while the Yeomen hoisted 50 attempts for 36 percent.
Wabash won the rebounding battle 39-26, which included a 12-7 edge on the offensive end.
The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 1-11 on the year and 0-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Wabash heads home with a record of 7-6 and is now an even 3-3 in league play.
Oberlin will look to end its skid when it travels to Kenyon College on Wednesday night for an 8 p.m. showdown.
