Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Yeomen Struggles Continue at Kenyon

Gambier, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's basketball team continued to struggle, falling 67-59 on Wednesday night at Kenyon College.

The two teams entered with just three combined wins, but it was the Lords who snapped a seven-game skid to move to 3-11 overall and 2-5 in the NCAC. The Yeomen have now dropped 11 in a row to fall to 1-12 and 0-6 in league play.

Freshman Andre Campbell had his best game in the Crimson and Gold as he finished with a collegiate-high 17 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting. Senior Jack Poyle added 13 points, while Joshua Friedkin chipped in with eight in the setback.

The Yeomen got off to a slow start as the Lords opened up a 17-4 lead with just over 12 minutes left in the opening half, but they would methodically work their way back into the game. A 9-0 Oberlin spurt that featured an old-fashioned 3-point play from Poyle and four points from Campbell had the gap down to four, 19-15, at the 9:17 mark.

The Lords would lead by no more than six the rest of the stanza as the Yeomen would trail by three at the half as Eli Silverman-Lloyd cashed in a layup in the final seconds of the frame to make it 31-28 at the intermission.

Oberlin stayed within striking distance for the majority of the second half, but could never close the gap. A jumper from Christian Fioretti with 7:43 left to play had the deficit down to four at 46-42. However, the Lords answered back with a 6-0 run to take their first double-digit lead of the session.

The Yeomen would continue to battle but Kenyon stood tall down the stretch as Oberlin would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

After shooting nearly 60 percent in the first half, Oberlin cooled off in the second session, finishing at 46.9 percent (23-of-49) for the game, while shooting just 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from beyond the arc.

The Lords, who cashed in 21 points off 19 Oberlin turnovers, shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor. Keyon also hoisted 12 more free throws than the Yeomen, dialing in on 18-of-23 (78.3%) charity tosses. The Yeomen, who outscored their counterparts 36-28 in the paint and finished with 18 points off 14 turnovers, were 9-of-11 (81.8%) at the line.

Oberlin will look to stop its streak when it travels to DePauw University on Saturday afternoon. Tip-time is set for 3 p.m.
