Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Holt’s Career-High Not Enough Against Hiram

Oberlin, Ohio – Sophomore Eric Holt dropped in a career-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough as the Oberlin College men's basketball team fell, 74-67, to the visiting Hiram College Terriers on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.

Holt cashed in 10 of the 17 shots he hoisted, which included a 2-of-5 effort from beyond the arc in just 21 minutes of work. He has now scored in double figures in 10 games, including the last three.

Senior Jack Poyle continued his march up the all-time scoring list as he added 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go along with a team-high six rebounds. Poyle now has 1,082 points as he moved passed both Josh Merritt (1079/2008-12) and former teammate Randy Ollie (1077/2012-16) to rest 18th on the list.

The Yeomen got off to a quick start and jumped out to an early 14-4 lead, but the Terriers came storming back to tie the game at 16 at the 6:58 mark of the opening half.

A layup from Jeremiah Thomas with 2:20 left in the frame increased the Hiram cushion out to eight, 31-23, but Oberlin would close the frame on a mini 7-2 spurt to cut the deficit down to 33-30 at the break.

Early in the second session a string of five straight points from Poyle put the Yeomen back out in front 37-35.

With just under 11 minutes left to play, Holt would tie the game at 43. Hiram was later clinging to a 50-47 lead, but they would create some separation with a 7-2 run to open up an eight-point cushion at 57-49 with 6:22 remaining in the game.

The Yeomen continued to battle as a strong finish in the lane from Zach Moo Young shrunk the margin down to three at 61-58 with 2:38 left to expire.

With 90 seconds to go the Oberlin shortfall was seven and unfortunately the Yeomen would get no closer the rest of the way as Hiram made seven free throws over the final 52 seconds to put the game away for good.

The Yeomen shot 25-of-60 from the floor for a 41.7 percent clip, however, their season-long 3-point woes continued as they went just 5-of-26 from distance for a 19.2 percent success rate.

The Terriers, who also struggled from long range by going 2-of-16 (12.5%), shot 44.1 percent overall with 26 makes on 59 shots.

Oberlin will return to the road on Wednesday night when it travels south to take on Denison University. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m.
