Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 9 Denison Tops Oberlin

Granville, Ohio - The ninth-ranked Big Red of Denison lived up to their nationally billing, defeating the Oberlin College men's basketball team, 89-73, on Wednesday night at Livingston Gymnasium.

The victory moved the Big Red to a perfect 11-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference action as they are now 17-1 overall.

Oberlin struggled to slow down Division II transfer Jett Speelman as the 6-foot-7 senior poured in 25 points to go along with six rebounds to lead the way for both sides.

Four Yeomen finished in double figures led by sophomore Eric Holt who cashed in 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Classmate Eli Silverman-Lloyd also had the hot hand, hitting on 7-of-10 shots for 16 points. Senior Jack Poyle added 13, while rookie Joshua Friedkin chipped in with 11.

The Yeomen stayed close in the early going as a nice up-and-under move in the paint from Silverman-Lloyd had the Denison lead down to three at 16-13 with 11:08 left in the opening half. The Big Red would increase the cushion out to 10, 23-13, and later in the frame a triple-hit from Poyle had the gap down to seven. Unfortunately, Yeomen would go scoreless for the final 3:19 of the stanza as the Big Red led 41-30 at the half.

The Big Red would never relinquish their double-digit advantage in the second half and eventually opened up a 21-point lead on a David Meurer 3-pointer with 8:14 left to play in the game. However, the Yeomen wouldn't go away without a fight as five straight points from Silverman-Lloyd and a three from Holt had the deficit down to 13, 82-69, with 2:22 remaining, but the final outcome was never in jeopardy.

Denison used its distinct size advantage to out-rebound the Yeomen 33-19, which included an 11-5 margin on the offensive end translating into 15 second-chance points. The Big Red also outscored the Yeomen 56-32 in the paint.

Both teams shot well from the floor with the Yeomen checking in at 54.5 percent (30-of-55), while the Big Red was slightly better at 57.9 percent (33-of-57). They were both an identical 7-of-19 (36.8%) from beyond the arc. However, the Big Red had the advantage at the free throw line where they went 16-of-17 (94.%) compared to the Yeomen's 6-of-8 (75%) showing.

Oberlin will have another tough test when it returns home to host Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
