Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second Half Hiccups Cost Yeomen at Allegheny

Meadville, PA - It was a tale of two halves for the Oberlin College men's basketball team as the Allegheny College Gators knocked off the Yeomen, 75-65, on Wednesday night at the David V. Wise Center.

The Yeomen shot a blistering 66.7 percent (16-of-24) in the first half, but it was a different story in the second session as they scored just 23 points over the final 20 minutes of play, connecting at  a 27.7 percent clip with nine makes on 33 attempts.

After the high-paced first half, the second stanza was a grind for both squads, but it was the Gators who notched their second North Coast Athletic Conference win of the season to move to 2-7 in the league and 5-11 overall. The Yeomen remain winless in the conference at 0-8 and are now 1-14 on the season.

Senior Jack Poyle led the Yeomen with 15 points, all of which came in the first half. Sophomore Eric Holt added nine points, while rookie Christian Fioretti posted a career-high nine points in the setback. Classmate Charles Tiedemann also netted a career-best eight points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting in just 12 minutes of work.

The opening portion of the first half was closely contested as the Gators were clinging to a 21-20 lead with 11:39 left in the frame. However, just over three minutes later Allegheny increased its advantage out to 10, 32-22, but the Yeomen would catch fire from distance to get right back into the game.

A pair of triple-hits from Holt and one each from Poyle and Fioretti had the gap down to three at 37-34. Later in the stanza a personal 5-0 spurt from Poyle would tie the game at 40 as the two foes were ultimately deadlocked at 42 at the intermission.

Midway through the second half the Yeomen had just five points as the Gators opened up a 56-47 lead. The Yeomen would get within four three times, but could get no closer. Following a layup from Andre Campbell, Fioretti would steal the inbounds pass and would quickly lay it in with contact. He would complete the 3-play to make it 63-59 at the 4:40 mark, but Allegheny would quickly push the margin back out to eight and never looked back.

The Gators had four players in double figures with Jordan Rawls leading the charge with 18 points to go along with eight rebounds.

Oberlin was hindered by 18 turnovers that turned in 26 points for the Gators.

The Yeomen return home to host Hiram College on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
