NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Oberlin College field hockey concluded their southern swing, dropping a Labor Day matchup to the talented Christopher Newport University Captains, 7-0.
Despite the scoreline, the Yeowomen held their own against the Captains who rank 14th in the preseason National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll.
Senior goalie
Maggie Gossiaux faced an onslaught in net, seeing 42 shots and finishing with a season-high 20 stops. Gossiaux had help with three defensive saves. Junior Dillon Sebastain, senior
Jennifer Krakower and newcomer
Luisa McGarvey all turned away CNU attempts to aid in the defensive cause.
The Captains gained an early lead with a break through goal in the fourth minute. The Captains Abby Cryts hammered home the second Christopher Newport goal two minutes later, before Oberlin intensified their defensive efforts.
The Yeowomen kept the Captains out for the next 15 minutes, but an offensive push before the end of the half produced four more unanswered goals before the break.Â
Trailing 6-0 at the intermission, the Yeowomen nearly held the Captains scoreless in the second frame. The final goal for the Captains was their lone score of the second half when Christopher Newport's Riley Keeter snuck an attempt past Gossiaux.
Offensive woes coupled with a fierce performance from the Christopher Newport defense held Oberlin to one shot, which came from
Ariana Enzerink.
Oberlin field hockey will return to Ohio to begin North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, September 10, when they travel to Granville, Ohio to battle the Denison University Big Red.
Action from Granville is slated for 11 a.m.
