Granville, Ohio – The Oberlin College field hockey team put forth a strong defensive effort, but couldn't generate enough offense as the Denison University Big Red topped the Yeowomen, 4-0, in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
Sophomore goalie
Kennedy Kline was impressive in her first start of the season as she made a career-high 13 saves to keep the Yeowomen in the contest throughout. Senior
Emma Hahn also added a defensive save in the setback.
The loss dropped the Yeowomen to 0-3 and 0-1 in NCAC play while Denison improved to 2-1 and 1-0 in league action.
For the second straight game, Oberlin was unable to create any up-field movement, triggering just two shots in the match – both of which came off the stick of
Ariana Enzerink.
At the 11:41 mark of the first half Charlotte Happel cashed in the game's first goal as she finished off a through-ball from Ali Gakenheimer. Later in the half, it was Alyssa Bahel who took a cross from Abby Martone to make it a 2-0 game.
It would remain a two-goal advantage for the next 40 minutes as the Yeowomen continued to fend off the attacking pressure of the Big Red.
In the 63
rd minute Happel sent in her second score of the game with the help of a Bahel feed and at the 69-minute mark the game's scoring would come to an end as Lucy Pearsall cashed in a penalty corner as she one-timed in a pass from Martone.
Oberlin will conclude its season-opening four-game road trip at Kenyon College on Tuesday afternoon. The opening whistle is set for 4:30 p.m.
