Field Hockey Hangs Tough with OWU

Oberlin, Ohio – The 2016 Homecoming Weekend officially kicked off with the Oberlin College field hockey team putting up a strong fight against Ohio Wesleyan University, but in the end the Bishops prevailed 2-0.
 
With both teams featuring strong defensive play in the first half, the match was scoreless at the intermission.
 
The Yeowomen had two promising scoring chances early in the second half, but the Bishops Gabi Coty came away with two huge defensive saves. Maureen Coffey had a look from in tight, while Ariana Enzerink would rip one from the top of the arc that Coty turned away.
 
The Bishops would break open the 0-0 scoreline in the 59th minute as Ashley Barno redirected Julia Melio's service into the arc into and flicked in past Yeowomen keeper Maggie Gossiaux.
 
Libby Royer and Coffeey each had shots on frame down the stretch as Oberlin was looking for the equalizer, but it would be OWU who would tack on an insurance goal in the final minute to preserve the win.
 
The Bishops moved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC, while Oberlin dropped to 0-7 and 0-4 in league action.
 
Shots were even at 13 a piece with the Yeowomen finishing with a slight 9-8 edge in shots on goal. The Bishops triggered eight corners, while Oberlin had five.
 
Gossiaux finished with six saves, running her season total to 62.
 
Oberlin has a short turnaround as it heads to Wittenberg on Sunday for a 1 p.m. showdown.
