Field Hockey Stumbles at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Despite a solid offensive performance from Oberlin College field hockey the Yeowomen dropped a Sunday afternoon conference bout to Wittenberg University, 4-1.

The Yeowomen fell behind early as the Tigers knocked trough their first goal in the opening minute.

Wittenberg would put the Yeowomen behind by two scores with another goal in the 8th minute after a barrage of penalty corners.

Trailing 2-0, Oberlin got on the board when Libby Royer and Meg Parker connected to cut the Tiger lead in half. Parker beat the Wittenberg starting keeper, Sarah Brownwell, in the 34th minute for her first goal of the year.

Behind Parker's goal, Ariana Enzerink and Maureen Coffey led the offensive charge with two shots each. As a unit, the Yeowomen were accurate around goal putting five of their six shots on goal. Coffey, Enzerink, Parker and Julia Birenbaum all registered shots on goal in the loss.

It was another quick strike that put the Tigers up 3-1 as Wittenberg's Riley Trexler cashed in on her first score of the afternoon. Trexler found the back of the Oberlin net in the 51st for her second tally of the day to extend their lead to three goals.

The Tigers continued to cause trouble for senior goalkeeper Maggie Gossiaux in the late minutes as the Metuchen, New Jersey, native was called into action twice more in the closing minutes en route to a six save performance.

The six stops at Wittenberg elevates her season total to 68 through six appearances in goal.

The Yeowomen will return home on Thursday, September 29, to host the Big Red of Denison University at 4:30 p.m.
