Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Yeomen Win Fifth Straight Match

Berea, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team earned its fifth straight victory, knocking off the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets, 4-3, on Wednesday night at Tressel Field.

The win moved the Yeomen to 6-1 overall and are in the midst of their longest winning streak since 2013 when they won six in a row in a season in which they finished 14-4-4 and went into the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Despite entering the match at 1-6, the Yellow Jackets gave the Yeomen fits, especially in the second half. Thankfully, Nick Wertman's second score of the season in the 88th minute prevented overtime as he cashed in a pass from Jesse Lauritsen to break the stalemate and send the Yeomen home as winners.

In the opening stanza the Yellow Jackets put eight shots on frame, but goalie Koryn Kraemer stood tall and denied seven of those attempts to ensure the Yeomen had the half-time lead. The sophomore backstop would end the contest with a career-high 12 saves.

Despite the aggressive play from Baldwin Wallace it was the Yeomen who struck first. In the ninth minute of the match, junior Timothy Williams notched his third goal of the season with the help of an Adam Chazin-Gray service.

The Yellow Jackets would finally push one past Kraemer in the 22nd minute as Carter Sutton finished off a feed from Jack Shirley.

However, it would ultimately be the Yeomen who took the lead into the intermission as local Oberlin native Jack McMillin would send in his first collegiate goal in the 35th minute of action.

The Yeomen started the second half on the attack, looking to increase their lead. Williams had an attempt hit off the post, while senior Sam Weiss had his shot turned away by Ryan Asbury all within the first 11 minutes of the session.

It was highly touted BW freshman Danny Ruple who would even the match at 2-2 in the 72nd minute, but the Yeomen had a quick response to recapture the lead. In the 76th minute it was sophomore Brian James who put Oberlin back out in front with his first collegiate goal, becoming the 11th different player to produce a point for the Yeomen this season.

The quick scoring pace would continue with a BW answer less than a minute later as this time Ruple was the distributor on a Logan James goal to even the match once again at 3-3.

However, Wertman was able to send in the fifth game-winning goal of his career to avoid extra time.

BW finished with a 25-10 advantage in shots, including a 15-7 margin in shots on goal. However, Oberlin triggered three corners compared to BW's two.

The Yeomen will be back in action on Homecoming Saturday as they host DePauw University in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener. The first touch is set for noon.
