Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Yeomen Earn Homecoming Win Over DePauw

Oberlin, Ohio – Mr. Clutch does it again for the Oberlin College men's soccer team as senior Nick Wertman's goal in the 87th minute lifted the Yeomen to a thrilling, 2-1, victory over the DePauw University Tigers in front of a large homecoming crowd on Saturday afternoon.

For Wertman it was his second straight game-winning goal and sixth of his illustrious career. For the Yeomen as a team, it was their second win against the Tigers out of six tries all-time. The last Yeomen victory came in 2013 in a 1-0 triumph. All six matches between the two league foes have been decided by one goal.

Furthermore, the victory also extended the team's winning streak to six matches, mirroring a string they put together in 2013 en route to finishing 14-4-4 and making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Wertman's goal would have been all for naught if it wasn't for the impeccable play of the Yeomen's rearguard that fended off 20 shots from the Tigers and squashed multiple threats throughout the afternoon.

Oberlin was six minutes away from earning a 1-0 victory, but a foul call in the box awarded the Tigers a penalty kick. Julian Gonzalez would step up to the spot, sending in his seventh goal of the season passed the out-stretched arms of Koryn Kraemer into the lower right corner of the net.

On Wertman's winning-finish, Brian James played the ball ahead of him to the right wing where he beat as marker before going low past DePauw netminder Harrison Glover.

In the first half, Trenton Bulucea wasted no time in getting the Yeomen on the board, scoring 19 seconds into the match as he sent in laser from 20 yards out into the upper right 90 of the goal for his first tally of the year. Timothy Williams set him up for the strike - playing back a long ball to Bulucea's feet as he one-timed the shot.

Both sides had promising chances to find the net as the opening half continued, but the Tigers were denied six times by Kraemer, which included two diving saves. Peter White also had a piercing attempt hit off the crossbar.

In the 27th minute Wertman had a diving header that was flicked over the bar by Glover for one of his four first-half saves.

Kraemer finished with eight stops to run his season total to 37, while his Tigers' counterpart, Glover, ended with six.

DePauw ended with a slight 9-8 edge in shots on goal, but the Yeomen pressured their backline into eight corner opportunities, while DePauw did not trigger one.

The loss dropped the Tigers back to 4-2-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the NCAC. The Yeomen improved to 7-1-0 and 1-0-0 in league play.

Oberlin will continue its four-match homestand on Wednesday evening when it steps back out of NCAC action to take on Ohio Athletic Conference foe Otterbein University. The first touch from Fred Shults Field is set for 7 p.m.
