OBERLIN, Ohio - Following a two and a half hour match on Saturday that ended in a penalty shootout, Oberlin College field hockey were outdone by the DePauw University Tigers, 7-2, in a Sunday afternoon tilt.
Despite their marathon affair with Earlham, the Yeowomen returned on Sunday morning to face a challenging DePauw side, picked second in the preseason conference poll with two first-place votes.
In the open ten minutes, the Tigers tallied three goals to gain the upperhand. Clawing away at the Oberlin defensive front, DePauw added a fourth score as Erika Bell snuck a stroke past senior netminder
Maggie Gossiaux.
Trailing 4-0, the Yeowomen didn't throw in the towel. With an offensive charge spearheaded by senior attacker
Maureen Coffey, the Crimson and Gold cut their deficit in half.
In the 24th minute, Coffey netted her second tally of the year after weaving through the DePauw defense and rapping a shot past the Tigers goalie, Sarah Foye.
Coffey notched her third of the weekend and second of the day minutes later to push the Tiger advantage to just two, 4-2, at the break. Coffey earned her third score of the year after
Ariana Enzerink rifled a pass into the arc, which Coffey redirected around Foye.
Her two scores on Sunday bumps Coffey ahead of rookie
Libby Royer as the Yeowomen's scoring leader.
With the Tigers ahead by two coming at the halftime break, DePauw extended that lead ten minutes into the second frame. The Tigers' Paige Berliner notched her second and third of the day before Reilly Bruce tallied the final DePauw score of the game in the 58th minute.
Gossiaux was active in net, finishing with 18 saves against the Tigers elevating her season total to an NCAC-best 56.
The loss on Sunday afternoon drops the Yeowomen to 0-5 overall and 0-3 against league competition.
